Eritrean youngster Yonnas Lelisa, only 21 years old, has competed his first race in Europe, in Greece. In the GP Sotiras he landed on a 9th place in the bunch sprint. Yonnas is the newest perl in Ronny's Eritrea Pro Cycling team. He was born in the capital of Eritrea, Asmara, and won the U23 championships last week. Ronny offered him a pro contract.
Yonnas' first reaction after the race: 'I am very happy with the opportunity the manager gave me, and like you has seen today, I am not a 'pancake'. My potential is further than where I am now, I am sure of that.'
Ronny nods while Yonnas is saying this: ' I scouted him in the homecountry, Eritrea. Good talented guy. Good in hilly terrain and especially in sprints. Potential on each terrain, so I decided to give him a chance in my team. With a 9th place in his first race, he did please me. (laughs)
Eritrea Pro Cycling's been dropped to Div 8 due to financial problems. Ronny on the financial problems: ' We have now got a new financial system, so that should be fixed'. Next race of the Eritrean squad is the Al Ain race in the VAE. Race report will follow. Karl Cullen will take the role as a leader on him.
